4 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR APPLES BETTER THIS YEAR..
Once we get chatting to people and they find out that we have an apple orchard, we often get asked lots of questions about people's apple trees. It was very common back in the hey day when houses had larger blocks to have a few fruit trees in the back garden. So, it is no suprise that pleantly of people buy houses with old apple trees in them that are still producing fruit but - the apples are just a bit average.
Did you know there are a few quick, cheap and easy things that you can do to make the apples on your apple tree bigger and better.. let us take you through our tips!
Treat your tree to a little fertilzer. There are pleanty of fertilizers on the market, even if you use one that is quite basic, if the tree has been let go for quite some time it will benifit from the extra nutrients that it can then put into the fruit. If the tree is stressed and does not have the right amount of nutrients it can drop it's fruit as the tree will go into survival mode.
Prune your trees in winter. Pruning is a huge job in commerical apple growing, it is where not only many hours of work are put in but many thousands of dollars in labour. Pruning your trees in winter allows the apple trees to be shaped and trained in a way that is benifical to fruit growth and prevent fungus infections. See our pruning guide coming soon! if you would like the tips and tricks that we use to prune our trees.
Water! Seems obvious doesnt it, water the tree. Apple trees do not like to have 'wet feet' like most plants and trees they prefer to be watered alot at once (enough for the roots to be able to reach the water) and then dry out. This prevents issues like root rot and stunted growth. We water our trees for 6 hours straight once a week. So if you have an older apple tree that is obviously well established think about giving it a decent water once a week.
Thinning.. thin the amount of fruit on your tree. This seems ridiculous, you are trying to gain more fruit and better fruit and we are telling you to get rid of some of your fruit?! The reasoning to this is that the more fruit that is on the tree the more that it has to support, therefore, if you have alot of fruit on your tree but it appears small and they are all clustered together it is best to 'break up the bunches' into groups of one or two apples per cluster. Our secret is, for 1mm of a branch you can have 1 apple, therefore if your limb or branch is 1cm that limb can support 10 apples. This is a rough guide to space out your fruit.
Give these 4 easy tips a good go and you'll see that by giving your apple tree a bit of love it will give you some amazing apples! Need any more advice - send us an e-mail with your questions!
