Our Food & Hospitality Excursions
Our paddock to plate school excursion provides a hands-on, immersive learning experience that directly supports the curriculum for Food and Hospitality students. Here's what we will cover:
-
Understanding the Food Industry: The excursion allows students to see firsthand the process of food production, from growing apples to harvesting and understanding how these practices tie into contemporary food issues.
-
Skills Development in Food Safety and Technology: Students will observe and practice safe work practices in the orchard, from handling produce to understanding hygiene standards. They'll also gain insights into current technologies used in agriculture and food production, enhancing their knowledge of the food industry's dynamic nature.
-
Health and Safety Legislation: The trip provides real-world examples of complying with health and safety regulations within food production and handling, allowing students to explore the legal and environmental aspects of food production at the stage where it is still being grown.
-
Exploring Trends and Consumer Protection: Students will gain insight on how trends in different types of apples are produced and the realities of producing apples vs. what is portrayed in supermarkets.
-
Cooperative Skills and Interpersonal Communication: The excursion fosters teamwork and communication as students work through challenging activities.
-
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: Students will engage in problem-solving activities related to food production, sustainability, and healthy eating practices. The excursion encourages them to think critically about food systems in both local and global contexts.
Overall, the excursion provides students with a valuable opportunity to apply theoretical learning in a practical, real-world environment right here in the Adelaide Hills!
